The Need for Special Education Teachers

The amendment to the RTE Act focuses on appointing special education teachers to support Children with Special Needs (CwSN) in schools. This step aims to facilitate their inclusion in the mainstream educational ecosystem.

Pupil-Teacher Ratio (PTR) Guidelines

As per the amendment, schools must appoint one special education teacher for every 10 CwSN studying in classes I to V and 15 CwSN studying in VI to VIII. This move is expected to provide much-needed support to intellectually and learning disabled students.

Implementing the Directive

While the amendment has been passed, schools are yet to receive a formal directive from the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) to appoint special educators. Once received, schools will need to appoint new teachers or train existing staff to cater to CwSN’s needs.

Resource Rooms for Effective Learning

Creating resource rooms within schools is crucial for differently-abled students to learn effectively. These rooms offer specialized instructions, academic remediation, and assistance with homework and assignments in small groups.

Challenges and Adaptations

Teaching students with conditions like ADHD, Cerebral Palsy, Down’s syndrome, and intellectual disabilities requires special attention. While the prescribed PTR may not be ideal, special education teachers will adapt to the situation gradually.

Expanding Vacancies for Special Educators

With the amendment mandating one vacancy for special educators in every school across the country, more opportunities are likely to open up for qualified professionals.

Kendriya Vidyalaya’s Efforts

Kendriya Vidyalayas have been proactive in appointing special educators, with a target set to complete the process by November 30, 2023.

The amendment to the RTE Act promotes inclusivity in education for CwSN by appointing special education teachers, providing essential support and individualized attention to nurture their potential effectively.
