The Common University Entrance Test (CUET-UG) is a highly sought-after examination for undergraduate admissions in over 200 universities across the country. To ensure fairness and accurate comparison of students’ performance, the CUET-UG implements the Equi-Percentile method for score normalization. This method aligns the scores obtained on different test dates and sessions, enabling universities to evaluate candidates consistently.

Challenges in Comparing Students’ Performance on Different Test Dates

Since the CUET-UG is conducted over six weeks with tests held on different days, comparing the performance of students becomes a challenge. Chief of the University Grants Commission (UGC), M Jagadesh Kumar, highlights this issue, emphasizing the need for a common scale to assess students’ abilities accurately.

Normalization Process in CUET-UG

The Equi-Percentile method resolves the challenge of comparing performance by calculating percentiles for each candidate based on their raw marks in comparison to others within the same session. This process is repeated for every session conducted over multiple days for a specific subject. These percentiles are then equated and converted into normalized marks.

Benefits of the Equi-Percentile Method for Fair Ranking

By normalizing scores through the Equi-Percentile method, CUET-UG ensures fairness in ranking. It allows universities to assess candidates on a uniform scale, regardless of the day or session they appeared for the test. Moreover, this method accommodates subjects like Sports or Fine Arts, where skill components receive weightage. The equated percentiles provide a standardized benchmark, while the skill component’s raw marks are factored in, enabling a comprehensive evaluation.

Summing it up

The Equi-Percentile method plays a vital role in ensuring fairness and accuracy in CUET-UG admissions. By normalizing scores across multiple sessions, it provides a common scale for ranking candidates. This method accounts for subjects with skill components and allows universities to make informed decisions based on normalized marks and additional weightage, as required. The CUET-UG continues to be a significant entrance examination, attracting a large number of applicants, and the Equi-Percentile method contributes to maintaining the integrity of the selection process.
